I am really looking forward on today`s dabate here in the EU Parliament in Strasbourg conserning the biofuels target of the EU. The EU is planning to have 10% of the fuels used covered by biofuels by the year 2020. This goal is now being challenged because of the rising food prices.
According to WHO only about 10-15% of the food prices is caused by biofuels. The real problem is the speculation on food, keeping the price for food high and selling it for a good price; while people suffer and die because they are hungry. Like the leader of the socialist group Martin Schulz said: "those are the pigs".
When it comes to biofuels, we have to base our goals on facts, like MEP Riitta Myller said. And the 2020 target is only ecological sustainable if it is based on 2.generation biofuels, meaning biofuels from garbage etc. This is also supported by many experts.
But the food crisis is now. Lets do something about it.
