In the European Union the most politicians are worried about one child: the Lisbon treaty. After the Irish "No", discussion about the future of European Union and the future of Europe itself has been very exciting, but not maybe in a good way. Lisbon treaty is maybe not dead, but at least very, very sick.
The "no" part is strong. It is spreading like a virus. Not only does the Polish President Lech Kaczynski says he is worried about giving power away to big states, also Germany is facing problems by the leftist Die Linke and right-wing MP Peter Gauweiler (CSU) two legal challenges for the Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe. Conservative President Horst Köhler(CDU) refuses to sign the treaty before the Court has annouced its position.
Here is where far-right and far-left meet. They want to protect democracy and the people they say, but by voting no, they actually take Europe back in the time of nationalism and communism in a time where workers right, tackle againts a changing climate and peoples liberal rights can no longer be protected and be fought by only national governments. Seeing Europe as an enemy and not as an friend is the wrong approach.
So what can we do. There is a problem that has to be tackled. People dont feel like they are represented by the EU. That has to change. Europe was an answer in a time post-faschism and it is an answer also now. We have to get people to believe in co-operation in EU-level back again and making clear that an EU MEP is as good for you there as an normal national MP.
