Some might consider me as boring, I consider myself as lucky. I had the opportunity to follow the EU-parliament plenary live at scene in the plenaryroom. Today there was debatte about the Lisbon treaty and an self-reflecting discussion about the question where is Europe going? The Commission and Mr. Barrosso said little new, sometimes I wonder if Europe is just a playground for them and they are those parents who dont care about their kids playing. Also the chairman of EPP-ED Mr. Daul was only words without meaning.
But they were some speakers who have noticed what the problem is and were not stopped by the people dressed in green (respect the irish vote-campaign), saluting the irish and claiming they are democratic. Socialist leader Martin Schulz hold the best speech I heard in ages, talking about the lack of spirit for the pro-EU movement, rise also critics towars the Commission not taken the problems seriously enough (lack of social Europe) and towards the leaders of the Memberstates not being open enough for the public and taking the credits for Brussels but blaiming Brussels if something goes wrong.
A suprise was the right-wing (?) Group UEN leader and irish himself (Crowley) who talked pro-EU and againts those extreme-rights and EU-sceptics clearly showing the pro irish and pro EU are not those people dressed in green. The same message came from Ms. Doyle (EPP-ED) saying those pro Britains who now were green would have saved many lifes in the past if they had been for the irish in that time.
Overall, today the EU-parliament gave a strong signal that the excisting problems have to be taken seriously and that the pro-EU voice has to be also a pro-people voice; in other words, an EU which creates hope and not fear, respects and does not hate and listens and not only speaks.
We can be that Europe.
